Fulmo Frugal Tech is an initiative focused on making mental wellness technologies accessible, affordable, and practical—especially for students and individuals who are often excluded by high costs, paywalls, or proprietary systems. Our slogan is “Modesta!”.
While the Fulmo Talk Series focuses on conversations, ideas, and research around happiness, mental health, and well-being, Fulmo Frugal Tech is about putting tools directly into people’s hands.
What Is Fulmo Frugal Tech?
Fulmo Frugal Tech is a for-profit venture with a social mission. Its goal is to design, curate, and distribute technologies that support mental well-being without locking users into expensive subscriptions or opaque platforms.
The initiative operates on a simple principle:
[ mental wellness tools should be understandable, inspectable, and usable even with limited resources. ]
Rather than relying solely on cloud services or smartphone apps, Fulmo Frugal Tech emphasizes software that can run locally, offline when needed, and on modest hardware.
Building Mental Wellness Technologies
As part of Fulmo Frugal Tech, we are actively developing a set of mental wellness technologies that individuals can use to:
- Track moods and emotional patterns
- Practice reflection and journaling
- Explore talks and seminars on mental wellness
- Learn foundational ideas from happiness research and positive psychology
These tools are designed to be transparent and educational, helping users understand how they work rather than treating mental wellness as a black box.
Where possible, Fulmo Frugal Tech prioritizes open-source software, allowing users to inspect code, adapt tools, and build their own systems rather than remaining passive consumers.
Bundled Hardware: Refurbished Computers for Mental Wellness
In addition to software, Fulmo Frugal Tech also distributes refurbished laptops and desktop computers bundled with carefully selected open-source mental wellness tools.
This approach is particularly relevant in contexts where:
- Smartphones are shared or unreliable
- Internet access is limited or expensive
- Subscription-based apps are financially inaccessible
Each system is prepared to function as a self-contained mental wellness workstation, capable of running or using mood trackers, journaling tools, and educational content.
Open Resources and Frugal Access
Alongside its own tools, Fulmo Frugal Tech actively curates free and open resources from around the world—projects developed by independent researchers, developers, and communities working at the intersection of technology and mental health.
These resources may include:
- Open-source apps and platforms
- Educational material on well-being and resilience
- Offline-first tools that prioritize privacy and user control
Our emphasis is not on novelty, but on long-term usefulness, clarity, and sustainability.
Relationship to La Ĝoja Filozofio
At present, Fulmo Frugal Tech is using the website created for La Ĝoja Filozofio, a happiness philosophy that draws from psychology, computation, and cultural traditions.
La Ĝoja Filozofio provides the conceptual foundation for much of the work undertaken in Fulmo Frugal Tech, especially its focus on agency, reflection, and self-directed growth.
A dedicated Fulmo Frugal Tech website is currently under development, where detailed documentation, downloads, and product information will be hosted separately.
Why Frugal Tech Matters
Mental wellness is often discussed as a personal responsibility, yet access to tools is shaped by economics, infrastructure, and design choices.
Fulmo Frugal Tech exists to challenge the assumption that meaningful mental wellness support must be:
- Expensive
- Subscription-based
- Locked behind proprietary platforms
Instead, it explores a more grounded question:
[ What can we build if we assume limited resources—but unlimited curiosity? ]
Note: Fulmo Frugal Tech is a for-profit initiative. Revenue from hardware distribution and related services supports ongoing development, maintenance, and research, while enabling broader access to mental wellness technologies.
